Montana Department of Corrections Partners with TPI to Change the Lives of Staff and Inmates.

5 05 2011
The Montana Department of Corrections set out with a simple mission: “Improve the culture of the Montana Department of Corrections and we’ll improve the quality of life in Montana.”  20 years ago, Montana Department of Corrections employee Winnie Ore was introduced to The Pacific Institute curriculum and saw value in the Investment in Excellence® (IIE®) program in the adult corrections system. Over the next several decades, Winnie pushed through roadblocks and red tape, investing her own time and energy to generate enthusiasm throughout the Montana Department of Corrections for the curriculum. Soon, there was more and more of a demand to provide the education, and people began talking about this great “new” training program.  Through the continued work of Winnie’s co-worker Curt Swenson, Montana Department of Corrections Director Mike Ferriter, Pacific Institute Project Director Mark Schlosser, and Training Manager Lisa Hunter, The Pacific Institute curriculum was expanded to adult inmates at Montana prisons and Montana Department of Correction.

Last year, facilitators and inmate graduates at Montana State Prison and Montana Corrections Enterprises established a mentorship program and began a “graduate group” for the inmates who successfully complete the program. The mentorship program allows interested inmates who complete the STEPS® program to act as mentors to other STEPS® classes. As long as they’ve demonstrated through behavior, a commitment to implement the curriculum, they are given the opportunity to co-facilitate the education to other inmates and act as role models during the class and in the units.  The graduate group is a place for inmates that successfully complete STEPS® to return and discuss how they’ve implemented the curriculum, share success stories and challenges, and get a refresher from a trained facilitator.  Both of these programs have been successful in changing the inmate culture at these facilities.

IIE® Grad Summits Everest

21 09 2010

Congratulations are in order to Investment in Excellence (IIE®) graduate Laval St. Germain. Talk about self-efficacy…the pilot and father of 3 from Alberta, recently became the first Canadian to summit Mt. Everest without using an oxygen tank! For the full story on his climb check out this article from the Calgary Herald. As if that is not enough…Laval is not the only history-maker in his family. Back in 2006, his children Richard and Angela (who went through TPI’s PX2® program last year) became the youngest people ever to bicycle the 736 km Dempster Highway in northern Canada. The 10-day trip took them over two mountain ranges and across the Arctic Circle. Who knows what amazing things this family will accomplish next?

IIE® Takes Banco Promerica To The Next Level

21 09 2010
Banco Promerica of El Salvador is a company that understands the power of positive thinking. In 2002 Banco Promerica prioritized Customer Service Excellence Culture as a dominant driver of their vision and mission. Since that time, they have been recognized nationwide as one of the best banks in the country for delivering a consistently high level of customer service and have successfully grown the bank from 130 million in total assets to almost 400 million today.

The successes they experienced by a commitment to this goal has served as an excellent platform to launch them to the next level. By happenstance, Banco Promerica owner Ramiro Ortiz visited the Tice Ranch last year which launched a new journey for Grupo Promerica. It was “the dawn of a new culture in our company,” Ortiz later shared with his management team.

Ortiz asked Banco Promerica Executive Director Oscar Orozco to champion the implementation of The Pacific Institute (TPI) curriculum. Orozco attended Escalando El Siguiente Nivel in Leon, Mexico, “was captivated by the concepts and philosophy of The Pacific Institute and Mr. Lou Tice.” After returning from Mexico, Orozco started the ball rolling with an aggressive agenda to bring not only Investment in Excellence (IIE®) but also Pasos® Hacia el Éxito to  five  thousand employees of Banco Promerica locatedin El Savador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama and the Dominican Republic.

Since then, El Salvador has trained over two hundred of its employees, Nicaragua has trained 240 and this week Orozco is headed to Costa Rica to begin the training process there. The company is having one their best years in its history. Their earnings as of August 30, 2010 are the highest they have seen and it looks like the year-end earnings will be double that which they projected at the beginning of the year prior to Investment in Excellence®. Banco Promerica is encouraged by the immediate and positive staff results and by the excellent ratings the program and the trainers are getting from the attendees.

Making “Break Throughs” With The San Diego Urban League

21 09 2010
From “at risk” to “advance placement,” the Urban League of San Diego is using PX2® as a tool to empower a broad spectrum of local teens. Over 110 students have already completed the program developed by Fred Moore, Harold Neal and Willie Williams. The process includes a three to four week “break through” series that helps students learn the value of respect for themselves and others. Next up is the PX2® training followed by a one year experience of anchoring the UBNN news network for the youth of San Diego.
In addition, they have also began a pilot program with eleven Advance Placement students from Hoover High School and will be tracking their progress as they work to boost test scores leading up to the AP exams in May 2011. They have received great support from the District Superintendent and look forward to offering the training to other schools in the near future.

Kenya’s First Public IIE Seminar Is A Success

15 07 2010

Kenya’s first-ever public Investment In Excellence seminar took place last month in the capital city of Nairobi.  Thirty-one participants were in attendance, several of which were employees of KenGen,
the nation’s largest electricity provider.  During their three days together, participants focused a lot of attention on changing the negative self-talk that exists across the country, and they even wrote “National Affirmations” for a better future for Kenya.

Building on the success of this great launch, another public IIE event is planned for later this summer, and one of the most prestigous private schools has agreed to host a PX2 session as well.

TPI’s Dr. Gary Latham Inspires Hope in Central America

15 07 2010
Earlier this month a group of University Deans and economic leaders from several Central American and Caribbean countries gathered together at the Tice Ranch for an introduction to the TPI principles. Also in attendance was University of Toronto professor, Dr. Gary Latham, whose wisdom has played a key role in the development of TPI curriculum.

At the beginning of each session, Dr. Latham shared stories from his research and personal experience to back up the concepts and show how they can be used to help bolster a nation’s education system.  In the end, several of the participants saw the principles as a way to inspire hope in the up and coming generations in their countries, and many are looking forward to continued partnerships with TPI to help design plans for implementation.
